Aug. 27, 2018

John Asher

John Asher, the longtime spokesman and vice president of communications at Churchill Downs died today, Monday Aug. 27 of an apparent heart attack while vacationing with his family in Orlando, Fla. He was 62 years old.

Asher was probably best known to the public for hosting the Kentucky Derby draw each year a few days before the race. His booming voice was a clear giveaway of a background in radio — in fact, Asher won the Eclipse Award for audio presentation five times while doing radio in Louisville prior to joining Churchill Downs in 1997.

Asher is survived by his wife, Dee, three daughters and two grandsons.
