The Spur In The Prickly Pear – by William J. Chambers

by William J. Chambers

The Spur In The Prickly Pear, written by William J. Chambers, is a book for readers of all ages. It was written as a children’s book; however, parents and other adults will appreciate and enjoy the book’s plot, as well as the names of some of the characters and places that are symbolic to the State of Texas, as well as to the horse world.

A father tells a story to his daughter after they get caught in a thunderstorm while “checking the herd.” It was a cowboy’s story that came straight from his soul.

It started out with the Lord, who was from Texas, creating the earth. However, there was a jealous ruckus going on in Texas, so he divided it into three pieces. He was so distraught over busting it up that he threw his spur into a clump of prickly pears. The Lord promised that someday a brave man would come, a man with a pure heart, and he would retrieve the spur and Texas would once again be whole.

This book reminds me of “Forrest Gump,” which is all about managing the obstacles on one’s path – just like the lessons in The Spur In The Prickly Pear.
