CALIFORNIA SENATOR CALLS FOR SUSPENSION OF RACES AT SANTA ANITA PARK

Information from an April 3, 2019 article in the Paulick Report

According to an April 3 article in The Paulick Report, California U. S. Senator Diane Feinstein, in a letter to California Horse Racing Board Chairman Chuck Winner, has called for the suspension of Thoroughbred horse racing at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia Calif., until an investigation has determined the cause or causes of 23 racehorse fatalities since the current winter meet that began on Dec. 26.

Feinstein, a lifelong lover of horses, said, “I’m appalled that almost two dozen horses have died in just four months.”

Feinstein asked Winner in an April 2 letter for “more information about what the California Horse Racing Board is doing to both investigate the matter and address some of the concerns that these incidents have rightly raised.”

That same day, the California Horse Racing Board posted notice of an April 12 meeting that was not on its regular calendar. The meeting, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time, in the Baldwin Terrace Room at Santa Anita, has the subject listed as “Discussion and action by the Board regarding possible reallocation of race dates granted to the Los Angeles Turf Club (LATC) at Santa Anita Park Race Track pursuant to Business and Professions Code Section 19530.”
